| When: | On Friday mornings 11:30-13:00 2nd Friday at 11:30am |
The group has been running for a number of years and, in that time, several large topics have been studied, including the worldwide effects of the Enlightenment and the spread of the Industrial Revolution. Then a long period of time was devoted to the history of the Indian Subcontinent from the Harappan civilisation down to the independence of India and Pakistan. After a period discussing specific topics, we have changed to the present format which is proving interesting.
A group member researches an historical figure of their choosing who made a significant impact on life and or events at the time or subsequently. We discuss the impact both at the time and since. Many of the people have been previously unknown or little known to the group but the impact of their life, works or discoveries has been considerable. For example, Heida Lamarr, an actress well known for her roles, was also the discoverer of a frequency hopping device which formed the basis of modern communications devices. Without John Bradshaw’s certainty in the guilt and responsibility of King Charles I, the king would not have been executed, and the enhanced role of the parliament may never have happened. And do you know who invented zero? Come and listen and discuss, then do your own research and present.
The emphasis of the group is on informality and discussion. Consideration is given to questions of culture, religion, social history and the arts and sciences in addition to the framework provided by political history.
All are welcome to join us at any meeting. If you would like further information please contact Gill Wakley on wakley76@gmail.com
