English Literature

Status:Active, open to new members
Group leader:
When: On Tuesday mornings
2nd Tuesday at 11:30am
Venue: Pen Y Pound Club House

The aim of this group is to enjoy together the company of some of the great writers in the English language. We do not read whole books, but give close attention to extracts given and comment as the spirit moves us, or not.

In March and April we discussed some key scenes from Much Ado About Nothing, in May and June, A Midsummer Night's Dream, July, Christopher Marlowe and from August right up to December, Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus.

2026

Very happy to revisit the poet second only to Shakespeare. It was a very welcome suggestion that came from the group.
I have just watched Armando Iannucci’s YouTube video on Milton and it is brilliant. Other videos are available.

February: Hell, Adam, Eve and Sin. Should be fun ! We did not get to Adam, Eve and Sin so

March topic will be Adam, Eve and the Apple

April: Desert Island Books
Because there was no time to discuss where we would like go next, I am going to ask members, old, new or infrequent, to bring one, two or three books they would take to a desert island and say why.

Desert Island Books went very well thanks to the enthusiastic cooperation of the members.

May: Chaucer Never Dates

The question of how far a piece of literature, be it a review, letter or a novel, is of relevance or value outside its historical context

was raised in the April session. The group agreed to make Chaucer, born ? - 1400, the May topic, so perhaps we’ll find an answer.

New members are very welcome. Feel free just to sit and listen, and, If it’s not your cup of tea, you do not have to stay!

We meet at 11:30 a.m., straight after Law, in the Clubhouse, on the second Tuesday of the month.
